A very early payday saved this blog

I have to pay this blog’s host every 6 months. The last payment I made was scheduled last week, January 12. However, on that day, I did not have enough funds in my PayPal. I was very sure that my host would close down my blog. So I backed up everything and was feeling a little bit gloomy. I did not want to lose this blog. I don’t have a credit card and it was already too late to transfer funds from my Japanese Bank account to my PayPal.

Two days after the payment schedule, my blog was still alive! When I checked my email, I received a notification about PayU2Blog sending their payment 5 days earlier! And it was on the same day when I needed funds the most.  It’s the earliest payday PayU2Blog has ever had. Coincidence? I consider it as a miracle. ;)

Paid blogging for long distance calls

As some of you might have noticed, I sometimes write paid posts. Since it’s just a post of at least 60 words, I only get small amount from it. After months of writing, the payments sent to my PayPal account was enough to pay off some bills.  I’ve tried to withdraw my PayPal funds to my Japanese bank account but the transaction failed many times. For every failed transaction, about US$2 was deducted from my PayPal account. When I asked PayPal about it, they told me to ask the bank here.  When I went to the bank, nobody heard about PayPal.  So, I guess it’s about time to stop trying to transfer my funds to my bank account.

Now, aside from depending on paid posts for my blog domain and web space, I also use my PayPal funds to cover my long distance calls.  I’m glad Skype accepts PayPal when buying Skype credits.  And Skype call to the Philippines (both landline and mobile) is cheaper compared to most international call card rates!

I just hope that one of these days, Amazon Japan would accept payments from PayPal.

A year older

Shaynna and this blog turns a year older today. I guess I don’t have to elaborate on this blog’s theme change. :)

I’m happy and I thank God that my little girl is growing up so fast but the thought of her celebrating another birthday with me far away from home is really sad.  With my father’s passing away a few months ago, Shaynna’s birthday this year would be different than the previous ones.  This time, Papa Pael isn’t around anymore to sing his heart out in karaoke.  My family’s not only going out for a church visit but they’re dropping by Papa Pael at the memorial park.  But life must go on, and knowing Papa Pael, he wouldn’t like us being sad in times like this.  So, there will still be a birthday cake and some balloons for Shaynna.

As for this blog, I’ve been very busy lately that I’ve only done the some paid posts.  But, I still love blogging and when I finally get the hang of my new crazy schedule, I hope I could be active in the blogosphere again.

Welcome!

Welcome to the new home of Bisdak Babbles!

After painstakingly trying to find my way around my web host, it really feels great to have finally finished setting this up.

For my web host, I am using 1 & 1.
Why did I choose 1 & 1?

  • It is one of the cheapest web host around
  • They’re giving out huge discounts for their 20th year anniversary
  • Read many good reviews
  • It’s one of the few web hosts that has PayPal payment option.
  • Minimum contract is only for 6 months (obviously, my PayPal account didn’t have enough to pay for those that require at least a year lock-in period)
  • With my selected package, I already have 2 free main domains and 25 sub-domains.
  • I’m entitled to 1000 emails! (I’ve been wondering what to do with all 1000 emails)
  • I could have up to 100 databases.
  • They support WordPress. Though their default WordPress installation doesn’t offer much theme options.

I’m really overjoyed because:

  • Through WordPress, I was able to migrate everything! Including the precious comments!
  • I can now have “real” smileys :D
  • I can now use “The Calendar” with ease
  • Hundreds of easy-to-use themes

If you’re planning to sign up for 1 & 1, I’d be very willing to give yo some tips. They don’t offer much instructions on how to setup your own WordPress. Maybe I’ll post here a short tutorial soon. ;)

This is still a work in progress. For those who were linked to me, no worries, I’m still working on the list and I’d be adding up that soon, together with the blog awards and friendship badges.

Thank you all! I’m very happy to have finally made my move… welcome to my new home!

But I feel kind of sad about having left Blogspot. After all, it had been my home for over a year.

Wasted a Month

I signed up for a web host last month but I still haven’t made any progress yet in my new virtual home. If only I’m just contented with the limited WordPress features in my web hosts’ blog, I could have made my big move already.

By the way, I now have occassional updates on one of my blog, Exploring Kansai. I hope you will drop by there, too. Thanks! :)

Featured Blog #2: Pangan Thoughts

Rico started his online journal in 1999, when the word “blog” still didn’t ring a bell, when Blogger, WordPress, and other blog sites were still non-existent. Back then, Tripod hosted his blog and his laptop was the most beautiful laptop I’ve ever seen (I’ve always had a crush on all Sony Vaio computers).

Like the rest of Rico’s readers, his written (but not offensive) observations on other people amuse me, unless I find unpleasant comments about me! Be warned, Rico… hehe. He always has new ideas to keep his readers hooked into his blog. I just hope you’ll post more often, Rico. ;)

I’ve always enjoyed reading Rico’s posts. For years, I’ve been an avid reader of his blog. Rico also has amazing photos that I would like to give him one of the “Photography Idol Award” but this one suits him best:

Blog Break Lessons

I have the tendency to hide from the world when facing difficulties, thus, my 1-week blog break. It was really worth it because it’s now more apparent that I’ve really won new friends through blogging, and I was able to reevaluate my motives for blogging. But it came with some disadvantages…

* I swear not to stay away from blogging for more than 3 days or else I’d have to spend long hours catching up with everyone.

* At least try to take note of those who’re tagging me or else I’d have to spend my time looking for my name in everyone’s posts. The sad thing is, I wasn’t able to find it and I think I may have forgotten to add her blog in my list. I’m really sorry, whoever you are. I hope you’d leave me a message that it’s you who tagged me in a “hidden meaning of names” meme.

* I have to put off replying to the comments posted while I was gone, but believe me, I’ve read all your comments and I love reading them! Thank you. :)

I’m deactivating my comment moderation but I’ve enabled the word verification. I’m becoming lazier logging in to my dashboard just to filter out the spams. I’ll just delete them later. ^^

And So It Begins

It’s officially year 2008! I planned on attending the midnight mass but I chose to stay behind due to some emergencies at home. This kept me awake, made me wake up very late and missed my chance to watch the first sunrise of the year!

This afternoon, I finally decided to shake off my worries and anxiety and went out to continue my quest to find snow! Unfortunately, the weather forecasts failed me for the second time because there wasn’t a single speck of snow in Kyoto. Perhaps if I opt for the Kyoto mountains, I could have seen lots of it. Anyway, at least I saw and took this picture of the first sunset this year.

I also took up the challenge to blog for 365 days this year and joined Blog 365. I’m inviting everyone to join!

Future Blog Plan

Before I started out this blog, I have been trying out dozens of free web hosts. I have always enjoyed trying out different page layouts and selecting colors that best suit me. Above all, I want to have a complete reign of this virtual home.

Now, that this blog is already more than a year old, I have plans of migrating to my very own domain. I still don’t know when to take this step but I have started my search for a good web host which offers a plan that is within my budget. And I must admit, this quest is very tough.

Luckily, I found http://www.webhostingchoice.com . By just entering the monthly cost, setup fee, the disk space I desire, and/or the bandwith, my option is narrowed down! The results page does not only display the web host name, but so are other key details like rating, disk space, database, and operating system. It’s now easier to compare the web hosts! I think I already made my choice…

Erased from the face of Google Search

A friend asked for the URL of this blog so I just told her to search for “shiera” in Google. I was pretty sure that she could find me in the first page of the search results but days later, she told me that she didn’t find me in Google. I tried the search and true enough, my blog didn’t appear in the first 20 pages, and I have a very bad feeling that my blog won’t get listed even in the 1000th page.

So, it finally happened to me. I’ve came across articles about Google blocking blogs who have sponsored entries. Since I have but a single entry, I knew I was not far from being extinguished from Google search.

I’ve experienced having my favorite websites blocked at the companies I’ve worked for, but I didn’t know that having my blog banned feels a lot weirder.
