The Merlion

It took me five months to finally get a closer look at The Merlion! If not for my friend’s Japanese friend coming over to Singapore, it would have taken me months more. There’s nothing special with it, really. Maybe because we went there on a cloudy afternoon. From the pictures I’ve seen, it would have been beautiful if we went there at night. My friend took my photo with the Merlion in the background but I just can’t post it. I’ve gained so much weight and I don’t want to see that when I open my blog! My cellphone’s camera (5 megapixels) is more frustrating. My old 3 megapixels camera phone gave me much better photos! So I played with the Merlion’s photo a little bit. Here’s the sepia effect:

Not just an ordinary wheel

As I live in the east side of Singapore, it is more convenient to take the MRT to the last station in the west of Singapore. But if you have more time, it is much better to take the bus. It’s like taking one of those sightseeing bus, and more. You will also get to see the “ordinary” sights of the city.

During my first few weeks here, I took the bus from Bedok to VivoCity. Good thing it was a 2-storey bus. Along the way, I saw this:

I thought it was just on one of those ferris wheels in a theme park. I have just actually noticed that it is higher than those buildings! That wheel is actually the famous Singapore Flyer.  The “capsules” are big enough to hold a full butler sky dining! Isn’t it cool?  I still have no idea if the up high is breathtaking or not. But I am optimistic that SGD29.50 for about 30-minute ride is worth it.  I will definitely update this entry once I try getting inside one of those capsules… say 3 years from now?

Sales talk

I often buy my toiletries at Watson’s because almost everything is cheaper there compared to the supermarket. Also, there are stuff I need that I can only find at Watson’s.

Yesterday, as I was trying to decide which conditioner I should try this time, a saleslady, probably in her late 40′s, approached me.

They call older women here Auntie. I still haven’t gotten the hang of it…

Auntie: You looking for shampoo?
Me: yeah…
Auntie: I hope you don’t mind. But your scalp is so oily. Probably that is why you’ve got hair loss and you are still young…
Me: (ouch…) Yeah. I’m worried about that
Auntie: We have a very good shampoo for that…

I felt really embarrassed that I wanted to get out of the store a.s.a.p. that I bought the shampoo she recommended.

That was the second awkward encounter I had with that auntie. Last time, I had a bad acne breakout and I ran out of the acne cream I used when I was still in Japan. As I was trying to decide which acne cream and facial wash to buy…
Auntie: Your face is so oily.
Me: (ouch!) yeah…
Auntie: That is why you have acne..
Me: (This is my face so I’ve been aware of that for more than a decade already) mmm… any recommendation?
All the things she told me about the recommended cream didn’t register much because I was still trying to erase from my mind the things she said. That time, I also bought the acne cream she recommended.

What can I say? The truth really hurts.  And in these cases, the most convincing sales talk!
