An advice from a taxi driver
Posted on June 1, 2009 - Filed Under People, Singapore |
Singapore might be a small country but two months of staying here is not enough for me to get familiar with even just the neighboring areas. Yesterday, my housemates and I went to a sports center. I went home ahead of them because I was supposed to meet a friend and I was running late. So, I took a taxi but it was pretty obvious that the taxi driver was not familiar with the area yet. He made a couple of U-turns and we had to stop for a while as he looked into his map.
Along the way, he asked me why I don’t know how to get home. To make the conversation short (and because I still find it so hard to understand Singlish), I said I just came here. He then asked me if I were staying with a friend. I told him I work here. After hearing that, I was surprised when he said, “Next time, don’t take taxi because it is very expensive. Take the bus. You work, then you pay taxi, you earn nothing.” I wonder if he said that because he got lost, or did he really mean it?
When I got out, his last words were, “Next time, don’t take taxi, OK?“

I’m not sure if he was giving you a favor. i mean, don’t you think it’s his loss have you chosen not to ride the taxi?
Or it could be that his (taxi) meter was still running at the time while stopping and checking the map. Like, it’s your fault now for letting him go through the hassle. LOL. I’m confused.
I say he’s working for the wrong profession. LOL

Probably not very much because there probably would not be much demand for taxi service in a small city like that. Now days almost everyone has a car or can get a ride from someone else. The only reason a person would use taxi service is to get a ride to the airport. A city of 40,000 probably does not have an airport. You might get a few customers that are too old to drive and need a ride to the market or the doctor. Taxi drivers usually get a percentage of the taxi fares so they don’t make anything when they are sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.
