Cerebral Palsy

I always watch documentaries from a Philippine TV channel. Most of the time, they feature children suffering from serious illnesses such as cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy is an umbrella term for a group of disorders affecting body movement, balance, and posture. Loosely translated, it means “brain paralysis.” Cerebral Palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, infancy, or early childhood.

There are two problems that can cause cerebral palsy:

  • failure of the brain to develop properly
  • neurological damage to the child’s developing brain

There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but various forms of therapy can help a person with the disorder to function and live more effectively. My heart always go out to people who are suffering from cerebral palsy. Above all, I admire those who still face life with optimism and those people who lovingly support them.

Cerebral Palsy is a horrible disease. I have read truly inspiring stories regarding people with this disease. One of the best was one woman who blogs on the internet with just her thumb. This leads you to believe that anything might be possible.
