Japan is relatively safe. But when you talk with the Japanese people, most of them would say that crime rate here in Osaka is the highest in all of Japan. Surely, I’ve read news report on cases of theft. Strangely, I have heard rumors on stolen undies. There were also cases of stalking and rapes. I thank God that I haven’t been a victim of these (I fervently pray I won’t!). Perhaps I owe some of it to the apartment building’s security system. We have a common lobby and for someone to enter, he should have that black “digital” key. The apartment is also equipped with a number of surveillance camera. Aside from these threats, the security system spare us from dealers who go from house to house, among other things.
Friday Quote #1

“Love is the most beautiful of dreams and the worst of nightmares.“
~ William Shakespeare
I couldn’t agree more with Shakespeare. Falling in love could be the most wonderful thing in a person’s life and changes the person in love. But passing through bumpy roads is inevitable. You would definitely get hurt. The person you love could be the one who loves you most but he/she could hurt you the most. If the wounds become too deep, you might, at all cost try to keep yourself from falling in love again. But love is so wonderful that when you see that someone you love might make you give love another chance. I know, it is very, very complicated. ![]()

Wishes
Shaynna is now four years old and most of the time I wish for that day when I could be with her. I wish I could afford to take her to wherever life brings me to. I wish she could see the things that I see here in Japan. I wish I could take her to Disney Land and Disney Sea – every child’s dream. She first boarded a ship months ago and she enjoyed it immensely. So I’m pretty sure she would love it if I take her to one of those Disney cruises. It would the best mother-daughter bonding ever. Oh, I’m pretty sure my mother and my sister would tag along. So that would the nicest ladies’ bonding. I believe that wishes do come true…
Wordless Wednesday #24
What can we do?
Lowest temperature here in Osaka today is 9C. I’m supposed to hold off using my heater until last week of November but I guess it’s already too much for me. So I’ve unpacked my small heater and now at least I’m comfortable. I can’t help but think of those homeless people roaming around Osaka. Some of them live in the banks of the Yodo River, some under the bridges. My Japanese friends told me that many homeless people die due to hypothermia. This lead me to thinking that being homeless in the Philippines might be more bearable than being homeless here in Japan. At least in the Philippines, you don’t have to battle with temperature.
It makes me feel sad seeing a native in this country not having a home while I, a foreigner, have a home. May it be their choice or not, whether it’s their fault or not, in Japan, in the Philippines, or anywhere, it just makes me so sad seeing people having a harder time in life.
And yet, what can I do? What can we do?

Mesothelioma and Asbestos
Have you heard of mesothelioma before? I haven’t until recently. It is a form of cancer that is almost caused by previous exposure to asbestos. I won’t go into detail on this one, but it mostly affects the outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall.
Asbestos have been widely used in the industries and construction projects. But for health and safety reasons, this has been banned in many developed countries, but are still used widely in some developing countries. I have no idea if this has been banned in the Philippines or not. I was even more surprised to find out that a form of asbestos had been found in eight major brands of children’s crayons! I guess we have more to watch out for aside from melamine, huh? I wonder if we could ever use something that is 100% safe…
Overcoming Language Barrier
I’ve worked in the current company for over a month now. I belong to the same team and I’m still doing the same project. As always, it’s a big feat for me to get up early in the morning and take the almost an hour travel time to the office. The company follows a flextime and I love it. But our team leaders in some ways encourage us to go to work. I admit, I often suffer from imaginary nosebleeds while trying to engage in discussions. Our leaders know only a handful of English words, and my Japanese still needs a great deal of improvement. Just imagine how our conversations go.
I am really grateful that our leaders are very patient. They don’t get mad when I have a hard time trying to understand what they’re saying, or when I sound like a two-year old trying hard to express what I have in mind. They are kind enough to draw diagrams to get the idea through, while using the simplest Japanese word they could ever think of. They even tell us that we don’t have to work overtime! Yup, they’re the best. I just hope I’ll still belong to the same team as long as I’m with the current company…
Health Supplements
What are health supplements for? What are they composed of? What are their benefits and are they in any way harmful to the body? I have never been curious about health supplements until I came across CLA. From the article I’ve read, CLA or Conjugated Linoleic Acid not only gives health benefits but it could also contribute to weight loss. I think the good thing about CLA is it could reduce body fat and increase muscle, contrary to many diet pills. But nothing beats exercise coupled with proper diet. It is still the best way to lose weight but it sure demand a lot of discipline which I obviously lack. ![]()
Kimchi Nabe
I’ve just had nabe last Monday, but I’m craving for more… particularly Kimchi Nabe. So on my way home, I dropped by the nearest 24-hour supermarket and bought these:
After letting it stew for a few minutes, I got to enjoy this delicious, tummy-warming nabe while watching anime:
Actually, I still have some leftovers. Do you want some? ![]()
I love flextime
I’ve never been an early bird. Since I started going to school up to now, rising up early has been a constant struggle. Those who know me from highschool, college, and from my previous companies could attest to this. But if I am left with no other choice, I could force myself up but spend the whole day half-awake. That’s why I love the current company, even if it takes about an hour to get here. We have flextime here! As long as I arrive in the office by 10:45AM, then I won’t be in trouble. Especially now that it’s getting colder, getting up early is becoming more difficult. I want to wake up early so that I could at least jog for 30 minutes. I guess I need more discipline.
Right now, I’m still in the office with about an hour more left to complete the 8-hour work day. This is when I envy Gelai, my teammate for being an early bird. She already went home about an hour ago.
Bijin Nabe
According to Wikipedia>, Nabemono (??, ???, nabe cooking pot + mono things, stuff, kinds) or simply called nabe, is a term referring to all varieties of Japanese steamboat dishes, also known as one pot dishes.
A Japanese friend invited me and one of her close friends to her place. Too bad I forgot to bring my cellphone so I couldn’t share some photos. Indeed, cold weather is the best time to eat nabe and it becomes more delicious if you eat it together with people dear to you. There are lots of nabe “flavors”. One of them is Kimchi, but we got the “Bijin Nabe”. Bijin (??? is a Japanese term for “beautiful woman”. Really interesting flavor, isn’t it?
I really had a wonderful time with those two ladies and we even made a promise – they’re going home with me next year, to experience “Paskong Pinoy”!
